First, I would like to start by saying, I'm not for hyper consumerism. Moderation is key and people need to buy whats needed, not what the "they" say you need. The advertising juggernaut that has been created by our (American and Western Society) consumerism is sick. You can't escape an add placement anymore, which is very sad.
Given all that, I still feel this "new" Freegan movement is a joke! It is merely a bum lifestyle for physically and mentally able people. Call it what you want, and base it on what ever philosophy (anti-consumerism) you choose. The bottom line is Freegan = Bum.
Another interesting thing about this movement is the locations it seems to be thriving, the largest cities. Cities are the epicenter for rat race hyper consumerism.
Wouldn't a true "off-the-grid" bum, i mean freegan, migrate out of the city and to nature? Yes, and a true Freegan would live off land and enjoy not being anywhere near the hyper consumer rat race of a large city.
So, if this movement goes that direction I'll have to change the original equation to Freegan = Native American or Freegan = Amish!

EDIT: Btw, posted in this thread because i figured there's no use in making a new thread for this. Though the first guy seems to think better of all this than me. /edit
Oh god, i don't know where to start. I've read the main page and it's just.... lol.
Let's single out the part on jobs, since you're being pretty hypocritical there
quote: For most of us, work means sacrificing our freedom to take orders from someone else, stress, boredom, monotony, and in many cases risks to our physical and psychological well-being. ... Is the retail clerk who rings up a cut of veal any less responsible for the cruelty of factory farming than the farm worker? What about the ad designer who finds ways to make the product palatable? How about the accountant who does the grocery’s books and allows it to stay in business? Or the worker in the factory that manufacturers refrigerator cases? And, of course, the high level managers of the corporations bear the greatest responsibility of all for they make the decisions which causes the destruction and waste. You don't have to own stock in a corporation or own a factory or chemical plant to be held to blame.
If you would try a bit, you're the 1 giving the roders to people, and your "urban foraging" is probably more unhealthy than some office job or even factory job
There is no blame, people need to eat, with the amount of people in this world, animals will have to be killed, humans are omnivores, not vegetarians. I hope you do realise that if these people wouldn't work you wouldn't have dumpsters to live out of? If these people wouldn't work, they wouldn't be able to pay taxes spent on social security I'm sure a lot of you "freegans" live on? You wouldn't have your free furniture and food and so on. Imagine this, if these people didn't work... you.... you might actually have to work yourself! (I know! What a horrible idea isn't it?)
Urban foragers? You're basically rats. Only rats at least would get the good stuff if they knew where to get it :)
Though does anyone actually read this stuff? :) |

Wow, think clearly much?
Have you ever been poor? Did you go to college? This movement is not new. Alley surfing and dumpster diving is de riguer for most college students. How to make that new bookcase? Hmmm, milk crates and boards. A spool table. Did you see that Volkswagen commercial? (Da dadada...) Do you notice things on the side of the road, where people put them out to be taken "away"? Have you ever seen one of those items and thought "Ooooh! I could use that!" Have you ever purchased scratch and dent? Markdowns? Used from eBay?
Yes, there are levels of Freeganism. We don't all eat every meal out of a dumpster. We aren't all vegan. Some of us work more than one job at a time. But any frugal person has aspects of Freeganism to them. It's just getting the most for your money. And free is the best price!
Our American society is very wasteful. The Freegan movement takes advantage of it. If companies and corporations want to throw out items, why not take advantage of them? Their poor business decisions should not make taking advantage of them a 'sin'!
I AM worried/concerned about food safety, and am as scrupulous as I can be about throwing away food that is past its use-by date. But if I have milk in my fridge that expires tomorrow, and it smells ok, I'm not going to dump it today! And if my bread doesn't have mold growing on it, I'll eat it!
If I find something kewl on the side of the road THAT I NEED, I WILL pick it up! My friend is AMAZING at revamping items. I have some things that you would think were just fine, that she refinished, or re-covered, or even just stenciled. They're great.
If you don't like it, scram. Don't judge. If you do, but don't know, check out the Frugal Gazette by Amy Dascyzyn! Good ways to start! |

| Well, I would like to say to freegan equals bum. You are a complete bigot. Being a freegan is NOT the same as a bum by any means at all. Freegans are concerned about serious issues that threaten our future planet. You speak of freegans not working and that is simply not true. There are many freegans that have high paying professional jobs (like me) who simply choose to live the freegan lifestyle. Many freegans give their money to chartiable organizations. |

I'm completely new to this. How do I find out what's going on? Can I meet experienced Freegans? Are there mentors newbies can go to the dumpsters with the first time(s)? Thanks for any info for the Philly metro area. |

I dont know about any of you.I have been dumpster diving for the last 30 years.I dont mess with food. All i go after is electronics and scrap metal or anything else i can use for my 40 foot ship that i use for shipwreck treasure salvage. If i cant use what i find.I sell it on ebay or craigslist. If something is broken that i find an is fixable, ill fix it and use it or sell it or trade it.Last year i made well over 250k from dumpster diving. This year so far 30k.I find alot more than 250k in gold an silver an artifacts from the bottom of the ocean out on my shipwreck sites. It doesnt cost me anything to dumpster dive or treasure hunt as my truck is a diesel an so is my ship.I burn used veggie oil in both that i get for free.Gas engine that i use i burn 190 proof alcohol in them that i make from corn an sugar cane.I guess you could say im a Pro recycler.I cant even remember when i bought fuel from a gas station last.Make your own alcohol still. Its legal to make 10,000 gallons a year to use for fuel. You are a fool if you dont an want to be a slave to the wheel of labor and the oil companies.
Millions of dollars of Spanish treasure await those who would dare brave the eye of the hurricane. |
