How do you wash clothes by hand? I am sick of laundry mats and the way that washing machines waste so much water by the gallon. The drying part indoors will be crazy too. I would like to know how to do some of the old things that people use to do before "western living" dominated and ruined society. Thank you so much. I would like other tips on how to do things in a more Freegan earth conscience way too.
To wash clothes by hand you need a washtub and washboard. Put water and soap in tub, add clothes and scrub them on a washboard. Then put clothes in clear tub of water for rinse until soap it out. You can then hang to dry. There are racks for drying clothes inside and they dry especially well if you have a wood stove.
White vinegar is a GREAT softener! I put 1/4 cup in all of my machine loads. Our water is EXTREMELY hard, so white vinegar is a lifesaver for me.
Other GREAT stain removers and whiteners are lemon juice and salt mixed together, put it on the stain, then let the sun shine on! Rinse well, wash it up, and voila! White whites with no yucky stains!
And is there any better smell than clean warm sheets that have been dried outside? MMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!
